New deployment - No Optimization - Peer down
« on: April 26, 2020, 03:58:51 AM »
Hi all.
I have made my first deployment of WanOS. This is for a college assignment. I used the recommended configuration guide for VM environment (using bridge mode). It did work and from the client site, I can access the webserver on HQ site. However, I haven't seen any improvement, the graphs and metrics for optimisation doesn`t display anything. Moreover, the graphs for passthrough display the traffic flowing. Also, I noticed the peer tab does not show the devices have peered, but it can ping each other (and traffic flow between them). I just doesn't understand much, why the optimisation graphs does not show a thing.  Note all the machined are in the same hypervisor, what separates them are the vlan tags only. Is anyone can help? If I am not able to prove that the traffic has been optimised I won't be able to finish my assignment.
I could not find much information on the documentation, but I was trying to add an IP address on the LAN0 interface, as I could possible try different scenarios as well.

Hi Fabio,

The reason is most likely due to the second appliance not having a trial loaded. The second license was sent after the forum post. But since this a very common scenario and someone else might find this post with the same question, here are a few things to check:

Assuming a fresh install with two appliances/VM's in bridge mode and only IP addresses are added as the only config so far:
1) Load trial licenses on both sides. Check license status.
2) Check that wan0 interfaces point to each other. lan0 interfaces connect to the test workstations.
3) Wanos appliance/VM's have at least 2GB RAM. If any peers are in the peer status that should not be there, delete them.
4) Start a few TCP sessions from the test machines. Windows machines may need a reboot before start testing. Alternatively test between wanos appliances with this trick: From Wanos-A command line run:
wget http://wanos-b-ip/

5) Once peers show up on both sides, then start testing with larger files.

In a lab/test environment this should always be the bare minimum to get the peers up and start testing optimization. For deployments that involves firewalls there is a more comprehensive troubleshooting guide here:
Peer Down | Optimization not working | No Optimization
CCIE RS, CCIE SP, Mnet&sys

In my experience with a new test setup its almost always a license not loaded or wan0 connected to the lan side.
Sometimes coming back to an old test lab its a license that expired or some peers in peer status that dont exist anymore.

Check wan0 connects to the router or the other wan0, check license status, check peers table is clean. Boom..

Thanks guys for your support and fast reply.
I apologise I haven't replied any sooner, I had an online examination today, so I haven't checked the forum since I first post the question.
I have one more problem now. Before you sent me the second licence, I was trying to add a WAN emulator (WANem) between both devices to add some noise in the channel. So, I was trying to route the traffic via the WANem but the static routes that I set on the WanOS WUI, did not work. Then I went on the WanOS appliance command line and forced the static routes. Furthermore, when I restarted the WanOS machine, they would boot but would automatically switch it off after a few seconds.
So I deleted those machines and made a new fresh deployment. The Licence that you have sent to me cannot be applied to those new machines. I have tried even changing the MAC address of the machine and still it does not accept the licences.
Could you please help me with this licence issue?

Best regards,
Fabio

Hi Fabio,

Kindly follow the steps in http://wanos.co/docs/docs/wanos-admin-guide/configuration/activate-wanos-license/

Once we receive your request then, we'll generate a trial key for your machine(s).
