Version 2.0.2
« on: January 31, 2015, 02:19:17 PM »
2.0.1 is ready for production.

Please leave feedback if you find any issues so we can investigate and if needed fix asap. Note: No backward compatibility.

Packet Loss Recovery and Packet Order Correction features are available for very early testing.

Wanos Update
UPDATED: Link to Wanos Update

2.0.2
It has a major throughput performance boost on recent CPU/RAM hardware. Depending on hardware configuration throughput increase is expected to be 20-130%. On one specific test system throughput increased 2.3X.

Additional safety checks for packet loss recovery and packet order correction. These features are very robust and dynamic based on network conditions. Cold compression ratio increase significantly with these enabled (will get the specific figures). Link to guide -> UPDATED: Packet Loss Recovery

Some reported missing peer status info in the Peerstatus tab at random times.

MultiSite calculated required Ram incorrectly.

Added initial Health Status/Check tab.

SSH disabled/enabled via gui settings

Datastore drive configurable via GUI. (Still requires valid partition to exist). After updating to 2.0.2 double check / reconfigure datastore drive.

As requested the policy configuration has been made easier to edit existing rules.

Fantastic! I will get this loaded up on my home ESXi server and report back, probably this weekend.

Hi Antonie,

Are there any new features added to this version?  You have indicated some elements have been recoded. What are the improvements if any?

Awesome, thanks Jeremy. It would be great to see if you see any speed improvements or in the unlikely worst case, a degradation.

Hi Mark,

The change log is quite long but here are the key points:

General:
Linux kernel and modules were updated to more recent versions. This was needed to run on more recent top end servers.
We have bumped the click version to the latest.

Compression Engine:
The code was rewritten from scratch. All in all this was a risky change, but I think the benefit is going to be huge. On one client submitted replication sample of about 1.5GB, the reduction increased from 3.3X to 5.7X. We are optimistically hopeful that the change will make the Wanos cold compression very close to the likes of Silver-Peak and Riverbed. At least definitely on some types of data. We have also made the compression level configurable.

The figure above depends on the packet loss recovery and packet order correction, which is in alpha stage. It works perfectly in the lab, but needs some final refinement to be perfectly robust in production. We can enable this from the command line if your team is interested in testing. I am hoping that we can get this feature in an early beta stage for 2.0.1 in two weeks time.

Encapsulation:
Due to the some changes in Cisco IPsec VPN's dropping IPComp traffic without a trace, we have added optional GRE encapsulation and made the UDP encap which has proven useful, available in the GUI. Also the UDPEncap has been changed to provide IP layer transparency so that this feature is compatible with WANs with ACL filters based on the client/server ip addresses.

GUI:
Some minor improvements in the GUI has been made. The most important one is that WAN Rx stats is now also available, where previously only Tx info was available.
The optimization graphs has also been changed to make it easier to see the optimization difference between LAN and WAN.
Added appliance shutdown option
Time settings.
Gui bugs fixed:
Missing mask on destination subnet in a traffic policy.
Invalid gateway address validation check.

Multithreading:
Some changes were made to improve on the dedup multithreading in a multisite context.

Disk IO:
Dedup improvements in disk IO that made a 10-15% increase in TCP throughput.

What we are in the process of completing or integrating:
Another level of improved compression ratio.
Packet loss recovery - Fail safe methods.
WAN Health indicators: RTT, Packet loss and Out of order.
Out of path via PBR
HTTP Cache.

Short term wishlist:
Single NIC bridge for devices like the Intel NUC. E.g. to bridge two vlans on a single trunk interface.
Out of path tunnel mode for simpler cloud deployments.

Also

Console: By default console login is enabled on com1 with baud rate of 9600. The wanos 200 appliance uses a normal Cisco console cable and console settings.

Version 2.0.1.

It is a minor update from 2.0.0:

Updated drivers for SCSI Drives and Broadcom bnx2 based NIC's
Show Tech tab added to export configs and logs to help with remote support
More safety checks added to packetloss recovery in preparation for beta
Disabled GUI access on http port 80
Minor cosmetic fixes: dropdown options, system time in overview

Hi Anil,

Installation from scratch is the only option right now. Once we get enough data to determine that it is stable for production use, we will create the upgrade script. The update will upgrade 1.4.1 to 2.0.x while keeping IP addresses, policies, multisite configs etc.

Hi,

if scratch, how do I export & import policies ?

I have at least 20 line entries in traffic polices.

If you want to go ahead with 2.0.1 in production, then copy /tce/etc/wanos/policies over to the new system. If you have multisite then the peersites file as well. This is what the update script will do.

If I upgrade to 2.0.1 will it talk to the older versions correctly or do all sites need to be on the same version?
