: loading image to Physical Hdd
: Anil Kumar H July 15, 2014, 10:10:53 AM
Hi,

I was trying to load image to physical hdd ( 500GB & 1TB ) using DD command, though dd command was successful, wanos is not booting ( no error shown after system restart )

win32 disk image works only for pen drives or portable HDD.

I followed http://wanos.org/wan-optimization/?p=489  tried windows DD  & linux also, but still wanos not loading after successful dd

let me know how to load the image to physical hdd.

Hi Anil

As mentioned in the document it works fine for several users.

so i recommend to start with lower HDD and see or give screen shot process when its booting to suggest better manner

Hi Anil,

Please let us know if you managed to solve this problem, since the solution could also help someone else.

Are the two drives that did not work perhaps SCSI based?

Hi Admin,

1. For laptop 2.5inch smaller hdd we can connect to USB adapter or use portable hdd and we can load the image using win32 app, it works fine

2. How do you load for bigger 3.5inch SATA internal hdd where you don't have USB adapter. ( I used dd command of windows version & app crashes, linux version dd works but on machine boot nothing happens )

Hi Ram,

No issues for point 1, but for point 2 I see just blank screen on system boot up.

Hi Anil,

Here is an alternative method:

1) Write the image to a 16GB flash drive and boot from USB
2) Log in and stop all services: "/etc/init.d/wanosd stop-all"
3) dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sda bs=10M

*Note sdb here represents the flash drive and sda the HDD. Triple check with 'fdisk -l' that these are correct before running dd.

Hi,

I have followed your steps, I  still see machine is executing the copy from past 3hrs. I left it to run and will check next day. Usually how much time will it take.

Depending on the speed of the drive, with Win32 Imager it usually takes about 10-15 minutes, with dd about double.

That is quite a useful neat idea.

Hi,

Adapter idea is fine, I was just trying to figure out solution without any adapter & to load directly on to internal hdd.

dd command didn't work out, though it copied successfully, after machine boot it says " Attempting to boot from Hard drive " & nothing loads up

seems its not finding the boot records to load.

Hi Anil
i try to simulate your problem, and it successfully working

1. Open a PC
2. connect new HDD as secondary.
3. did low level format.
4. copied as mentioned in the document.

removed the hdd and installed in New WanOS PC. its good to go..

Thanks Ram!

Anil, are the drives perhaps SCSI based? If so, as an alternative, boot from the flash drive as normal and mount the datastore on the physical disk.

Are the two drives that did not work perhaps SCSI based?

Hi Admin,

its SATA based. I have tried mounting data store & it works fine. Does performance differs ? loading img on physical hdd or loading img on USB & then mounting the data store.

Hi Ram,

I have no idea why its failing for me. I have done exactly what you did. im trying to Dump on 1TB HDD.
