: Home network benefit?
: q8reflex January 15, 2017, 05:35:03 PM
Hi, Was wondering if you could answer few questions.

- Will WANos benefit a small network like a home network with around 20 devices connected and 20mbit connection?

- I understand that you need two WANos's connected together, my aim is to have a point-to-point setup and test the whole thing for some time. My question is, Which ISO image do i need to upload to some known hosting companies like DigitalOcean or VULTR?

- The benefits would vary greatly based on the type of data sent across the link. Is this for general home Internet traffic?

- KVM based hosting providers would normally need the RAW disk image. Usually with hosting providers, the networking setup is the challenging part, hence start with tunnel mode.

Thank you for your reply. It's just the normaly average internet usage, mostly mobile smartphones and tablets used for video watching, surfing, online gaming and so. Would you recommend any hosting company for that matter? i normally use DigitalOcean and VULTS but the latter seems better in terms of network performance and scalability.

Hi,

I suspect due to the cost of the hosting + the 20 Mbps license, it is not a good match for a consumer broadband link.

What is the main challenge with the current 20 Mbps link?

Sorry for the late reply,

- 20 Mbps is fine for our usage.
- Hosting will be as VPS, nowadays it's kind of affordable.

No main challenge for our home network except our location being in middle east which suffers from a lot of packet loss at peak times. Assuming our hosting uplink Wanos server will be somewhere in europe, this takes us back to the first question in this topic:-

* Will this setup (Wanos in tunnel mode) will improve our network quality?
* Will we get better throughput, latency, security, etc?

Thanks

Depending on link conditions (latency+loss), Packet Loss Recovery & TCP Acceleration is expected to improve throughput in this scenario. Probably some ports like 443 will need to be removed from bypass groups to benefit HTTPS Internet traffic.

Thank you for your reply John. Will give this a try and send our feedback here soon.

Any result after testing this in your home network?.. I would like to know if having a wan optimization on the internet with the following scenario would improve performance on applications such as Netflix, Youtube, etc.
Here is what i want to doL
 Home->WanOS->Internet->WanOs on AWS-> internet

guessing this won't be a good use case out of the box
as a business tool, by default wanos bypasses those applications, not optimize

there was some talk about accelerated ipsec or a vpn optimization mobile client
something like that would be more suitable for home networks to stream netflix etc
or disable the heavy dedup & compression features & run packet loss recovery fec
should work nicely over internet vpn
maybe tcp optimization as well

but then again to make the accelerated ipsec mobile client, how many home users would pay $10pm for acceleration vpn, people are used to getting consumer products loaded with ads for free. pretty sure there is no appitite to spam here
